Abizaid - Nuclear deterrence would work with Iran
“There are ways to live with a nuclear Iran,” Abizaid said. “I believe we have the power to deter Iran if they go nuclear” he said, just as we deterred the Soviet Union and China. “Iran is not a suicidal nation. Nuclear deterrence would work with Iran.”
I’m not convinced nor do I believe many nations in the region are convinced.
While the Iranian people themselves may not be suicidal the Iranian government on the other hand shows continued signs they are in fact suicidal, or at the very least will not be deterred in perusing their agendas which includes the destruction (one way or another) of other nation states. To be fair to the the former General, a full summary of his remarks are embodied in this quote, “War would be devastating to everyone, and we should avoid it to every extent we can.”
