Pro-Life? You’re In The Majority
According to a Gallup poll, the majority of Americans now consider themselves pro-life by a fairly significant margin of 51%-42%. This is the first time since Gallup has been polling this question that pro-lifers were in the majority.
Interestingly, Gallup points to several of the Obama’s positions on abortion as potentially causing the shift:
With the first pro-choice president in eight years already making changes to the nation’s policies on funding abortion overseas, expressing his support for the Freedom of Choice Act, and moving toward rescinding federal job protections for medical workers who refuse to participate in abortion procedures, Americans — and, in particular, Republicans — seem to be taking a step back from the pro-choice position. However, the retreat is evident among political moderates as well as conservatives.
It is possible that, through his abortion policies, Obama has pushed the public’s understanding of what it means to be “pro-choice” slightly to the left, politically. While Democrats may support that, as they generally support everything Obama is doing as president, it may be driving others in the opposite direction.
Said another way, many Americans are rejecting the extreme positions being taken by the administration on an already contentious issue. As such, even ‘moderate’ Americans are being turned off. In my view, most Americans don’t like abortion (being ‘pro-choice’ doesn’t mean you are ‘pro-abortion,’ of course) and don’t like the idea of having it thrust on them.
But one thing is clear from this: the idea that being firmly pro-life is a loser for Republicans is just not the case. I would also venture to guess the same can be said for various other social issues as well.

So, now, the majority of Americans think it’s more important to save babies than to kill them.

Mike:
Given that 53% surveyed also said that abortion should be legal under certain circumstances – and that only 23% believe it should be illegal in all circumstances – I think citing the above poll in isolation is a bit misleading.
May 15th, 2009 at 1:00 pmInteresting, 77% say that abortion should be legal in at least some circumstances, but 51% consider themselves pro-life. I’m waiting to hear chants of ProLife-INO.
May 15th, 2009 at 2:31 pmNotre Dame is a disgrace. They have a speaker like King Obama who goes against their views. Having Alan Keyes and a priest arrested is insane. Why does King Obama have to speak at a commencement where his viewpoints are in direct contrast to the Catholic religion?
