“Spread the Word to End the Word”
by: Michael Illions | March 31
The Special Olympics is using today, March 31st a day of awareness for society to stop and think about their use of the word “retard.” Most people don’t think of this word as hate speech, but that’s exactly what it feels like to millions of people with intellectual disabilities, their families and friends.
Using “retard” as a term of derision is just as cruel and offensive as any other slur.
Please visit their website @ http://www.r-word.org/ to see how you can help.

I am sure you were as offended as I was when Steve used this word on 101.5…Just not cool.
I had a friend growing up who had hydrocephalus (the same condition as Cole) and the amount of times he was called R was disgusting. He is now almost 30 years old and holds a full time job and is a fully functioning and productive member of society. I know Cole will be a similar success story. That’s why I am always happy to personally contribute to the events you hold to raise money for awareness…
I just wish people like Steve Lonegan would stop using cruel and offensive slur.
