Bob Barr for President?

by: Michael Illions | April 01

Former Congressman Bob Barr is mulling a Presidential run on the Libertarian ticket:

Former Republican Georgia Rep. Bob Barr is considering a run for president on the Libertarian Party ticket, according to FITNews.

Barr, who joined the Libertarian Party after leaving Congress in 2003, is looking to attract conservatives who are unhappy with the choice of John McCain as the expected Republican presidential nominee. McCain and Barr are at odds primarily over the role of U.S troops in Iraq, although both agree that tough interrogation methods should not be permitted.

FITNews wrote that Barr will receive the endorsement of Texas Republican Rep. Ron Paul, a GOP presidential candidate who is still technically in the race but has not suggested he would throw his support to McCain. McCain and Paul, who ran on the Libertarian Party presidential ticket in 1988, also are at odds primarily over the role of U.S. troops in Iraq.

Can the Paul supporters make a difference?

“Ron Paul tapped into a great deal of that dissatisfaction and that awareness. Unfortunately, working through the Republican party structure, it became impossible for him to really move forward with his movement. But we have to have ….a rallying point out there to harness that energy, that freedom in this election cycle,” he said.

The Libertarian Party was looking for a candidate to run for President, and Ron Paul has maintained that he would not run as a third party presidential candidate, but never said he wouldn’t support one.

Barr was highly critical of the Patriot Act, feeling that it was an infringement on the civil liberties of Americans. I heard Bob Barr speak at a Conservative conference in Washington, DC in 2003 and was very impressive.

Is this the man that unhappy Conservatives and Libertarians will rally around as a alternate choice to John McCain?

I honestly don’t think conservative and libertarian go hand in hand. I don’t think conservatives would support a libertarian candidate, as I saw from the CWA event in January I believe it was, that the only supporters for Murray Sabrin as he spoke for Ron Paul were looney women and young adults who were just anti-bush and not really pro libertarian.

Stan, you’re certainly right that conservatives and libertarians have issues with each other. As for the January event, the questions and behavior of some of the supporters don’t represent all of us.

    Hi Stan,

I think looney woman may be a little strong, but good for that platform of issues that bring out young adults .. Take a look at the NJGOP and see what is missing ..

And while the 2 Parties have issues with each other, it worked in the 60’s/70’s when “fusionism” brought the Conservatives, the religious voters and the libertarians together to fight a common enemy: The Cold War and then again in the 90’s during the Gingrich revolution in ‘94.

Certainly, lately, Libertarians, and I mean the small “l’s” that go back and fourth between voting conservative in the republican party or straight libertarian down the line, have splintered even more away from the Party base.

We are seeing now with religious conservatives as well vs. fiscal conservatives.. The line in sand over what platform issues mean more than others has been crossed many times and has splintered the Party.

Anyway, if this actually happens, my advice to the parties and candidates is to try working together, maybe set up vote-swapping or something.

I don’t know if Bob Barr has the name recognition to pull this off as a Presidential candidate, without that, followers and money, it will be a short run.

Bob Barr isn’t even an across-the board libertarian. Barr has spoken out against the Patriot Act, illegal wiretapping, and other post 9/11 government excesses, as many libertarians often do. However, from what I understand, he still is at odds with Ron Paul supporters and other libertarian-minded individuals over issues like decriminalizing/legalizing prostitution and drugs. Besides, he has little to no name recognition.
