NJ GOP Leadership’s US Senate Motto: “If Its Goya, It Has To Be Good”

by: Michael Illions | March 21

As the US Senate race takes one strange turn after another, the only thing that remains constant is the strange behavior of the NJ GOP Leadership’s need to find a multi-millionaire to run.

The latest entry into the ‘Who Wants to be a GOP Candidate for US Senate‘, is millionaire businessman Andy Unanue, chief operating officer of Goya Foods, who’s political experience contains of donating to candidates of both parties and to PAC’s linked to electing DEMOCRATIC minority candidates.

So, what makes Unanue so attractive to the NJ GOP brain trust? Well, he’s a millionaire and he’s Hispanic so they think he will appeal to Hispanic voters. I find that sentiment in of itself racist and condescending to the Hispanic voters of this state, and offensive to me as a Republican voter.

We know nothing of his positions on any issue, which seems to be fine to the NJ GOP leadership and to commenter’s on other blogs, who welcome the potential new candidate and find this news “interesting” and “exciting”. That too, boggles my mind. The bar for running seems to be how big your checkbook is and appealing to certain demographics or ethnic groups.

Call me old-fashioned, but I always thought the best candidate, or a candidate to vote for, was someone who represented what we as voters considered important to us, not who had the most money or was a certain ethnicity to appeal to a particular voting block.

I checked his donations..he only donated to one D candidate and it was from California in 2000. For all we know, that candidate could be a good friend of his or something, it’s not like Estabrook’s donations what so ever. And the PAC is mostly linked to Democrats, yes, but it also has helped Republicans too and again that was in 2000.

He’s a good candidate on paper, just like Romney was. Young, business background, and yes he can self finance. It’s not all about money, but considering Lautenberg has $4 million, that doesn’t hurt at all. We’ll see what his positions are and if he can connect with people.

I’m waiting to hear his positions, but as you know there’s more then a few of us Republicans who want another candidate to jump in. Just on the blogs there’s a few of us.

The bottom line is there is still time to file and until then I see nothing wrong with letting another candidate in. I’m not supporting anyone right now and I’m more then open seeing someone jump in and hearing their positions.

    Eric,

I need further explanation on some of this.

Yes, I agree that on “paper”, he has good business experience, like Romney, however, Romney ran for Senate and served as Governor, there is some political experience there and I know you have to start somewhere when you want to run for office.

But I don’t understand how anyone can be jazzed up over someone who not ONE position is known, and yet everyone is ooohhing and owwwing over the prospect, which has to be based on the money, because there is nothing else to base it on.

He has ZERO name ID and no political experience ..

First off, outside of our web of activism and politicsNJ the reality is that no candidate on the Republican side has real name ID. (and one of them actually holds political office)

Technically your candidate has zero political experience outside of already running before, the only one who can actually claim the “experience” mantle is Pennacchio.

I think some people are “jazzed up” is because it is a third option, and there was a few of us who wanted another option. I think it’s unfair to criticize the guy already because he hasn’t even entered. On Monday he could say no thanks and this is all wasted energy. I’m not going to be “ooohhing and owwing” until I hear his positions and see if I agree with them, but I think there’s nothing wrong with being a little excited over the prospect of another option.

If anything, it might help your candidate out since it looked as though the “establishment” was about to swing towards Jersey Joe.
