“Hell Hath No Fury Like A Socialist Scorned”
Governor Jon Corzine has responded to Senator Frank Lautenberg’s criticism and lack of support for his 800% Toll Hike Increase by ‘cutting him off’ from much needed cash for his reelection campaign:
Lautenberg’s announcement was a surprise and led one senior Corzine aide to tell top Democrats that the governor would retaliate by ceasing his fundraising efforts, and canceling a Manhattan fundraiser to be held next month at the home of a Corzine friend.
In an interview yesterday, Corzine declined to comment on the aide’s threat. Asked about Lautenberg’s opposition to the toll plan, the governor said: “I don’t agree with his judgment on this particular situation. We see it differently.”
One of Corzine’s minions echo the sentiment:
State Senate Majority Leader Stephen Sweeney said Lautenberg’s announcement last week was not “helpful” to the governor, especially because the senator needs Corzine’s assistance in his campaign.
“It causes a problem if the governor doesn’t push people to help and donate,” Sweeney (D-Gloucester) said. “If his heart’s not in it, of course, it’s going to be a problem. Fundraising stinks to start with.”
With all 3 of Lautenberg’s GOP challengers against the plan, Lautenberg really didn’t have choice but to be against the plan. And that seems to be a theme as we head towards a November election for Democrat candidates for higher office or reelection:
Already facing unified resistance from the Republican members of the state Legislature, Corzine in recent days has been stung by the newly announced opposition of key Democrats, including state Sen. John Adler (D-Camden) and Assemblywoman Linda Stender (D-Union), who are running for Congress.
By objecting to higher tolls, Lautenberg effectively neutralized the issue in his Senate race, but put himself at odds with Corzine on the governor’s signature initiative.
I wonder what plans Corzine has, for what he perceives to be, these betrayals.
